Every interaction with the public contributes to confidence in policing. Officers are expected to communicate clearly, treat people fairly and remain accountable for the decisions they make.
Through visible patrols, emergency response, investigation and proactive policing, UKPS works to reduce crime and keep communities safe.
When an emergency occurs, frontline officers are often the first UKPS personnel to arrive. They respond to incidents in progress, disturbances, road traffic collisions, safeguarding concerns and reports where there may be an immediate risk to the public. On arrival, officers assess the situation, protect those involved and take appropriate action to restore safety. Where an incident requires further investigation or specialist capability, additional UKPS resources can be requested to support the response.
Emergency InformationEffective policing continues long after the initial emergency has been brought under control. Officers and investigators gather evidence, speak with victims and witnesses, identify suspects and establish the circumstances surrounding reported offences. More serious or complex investigations may require extended enquiries, forensic examination and specialist investigative support. Every investigation should remain impartial, evidence-led and focused on establishing the facts.
Safeguarding is a fundamental responsibility of policing.
Police officers regularly encounter individuals who may be vulnerable because of their circumstances, age, injuries or immediate risk of harm.
Where safeguarding concerns are identified, officers take appropriate steps to protect the individual and ensure relevant information is recorded.
This can include removing immediate threats, arranging medical assistance, identifying responsible persons and working with other services where additional support is required.
Protecting vulnerable members of the public remains a priority throughout both emergency response and criminal investigation.
Many serious incidents require more than one emergency service. UKPS works alongside ambulance, fire and other emergency responders during major incidents, road traffic collisions, public safety emergencies and other complex situations. Police responsibilities may include protecting the scene, managing members of the public, controlling traffic, investigating criminal activity and coordinating specialist police resources. Effective communication between emergency services helps ensure that every organisation can carry out its role while contributing to a coordinated response.
Public confidence depends on the way policing powers are used.
UKPS personnel are expected to conduct themselves professionally both when dealing with the public and when working with other emergency services.
Officers should make decisions based on the information available to them and continually reassess situations as new information becomes available.
Any use of force or police power must have a lawful basis and remain necessary and proportionate to the circumstances.
